Artist Statement
For my senior project, I chose to recreate four classic fairy tales, Cinderella, Snow White,
Rapunzel, and Briar Rose (AKA Sleeping Beauty) from Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm. I
manipulated the type on each page to match the story’s content. Every page is unique. I chose
these fairy tales due to my own fascination with folklore and all things creepy. Along with the
book, I created posters to go with the stories that include more color and with similar imagery
from the book.
I am fascinated by how water-like shapes create a pattern and their own movement. When creating my paintings, I use the water-like shapes to form a harmony with the background and
foreground as well as flat and spacious planes. I want to show the hidden beauty within simple
forms. I utilize color to create different planes in space and to establish different moods.
